The Ruling Concerning Hanging and Possessing Pictures. |
Question: What is the ruling concerning hanging a picture on the wall? What is the ruling concerning owning pictures of people? |
Answer: It is not allowed to hang a picture or keep a picture of any being that possesses a soul. It is obligatory to destroy such pictures. This is because the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi-wasallam) said, “Do not leave any image, but [instead] efface it.” [1] It was confirmed in the hadith of Jabir radiyallaahu ‘anhu that, “That because the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi-wasallam) prohibited having pictures in houses.” [2] Therefore, all pictures meant for remembrance should be torn to pieces or burnt. However, pictures that are needed out of necessity, such as for official identification purposes and so forth, may be kept. ________________________ [1] Recorded by Muslim. [2] Recorded by Tirmidhi and Ahmed. Al-Albani says it is Sahih |

The ruling on studying in the Masjid with Books that contain Pictures |
Question: Some students memorize their school lessons in the Masjids and they bring their books along with them. Is this permissible for them to do so, especially since there are pictures of humans and animals in the schoolbooks? Is there anything wrong with this? |
Answer: There is no harm in reading and studying school lessons in the Masjids. However, it is obligatory to protect the Houses of Allah from harm, the raising of voices, and likewise, the entry of foolish people and children who will not respect the Masjid carpeting,Masahif (books of Qur'an), walls and similar things. If there is safety from any harm, then there is no prohibition from studying. Concerning the lessons and papers that contain pictures of animals, it is not permissible to bring them into the Masjids, out of respect for the houses of Allah , and keeping them free of pictures, which the angels flee from. Therefore, they (the students) should not bring these pictures with them or they should erase the picture of the animal or its head and whatever else would cause the life in it to cease (i.e.,make it not resemble a living creature). |

Storing Books and Magazines That Have Pictures in Them |
Question: As a student in a secondary school, I enjoy passing my time by reading, which has prompted me to subscribe to a number of magazines. Some of these are Islamic in content, some are for general news and general information, and some are military magazines. Most of these magazines, though, have pictures of people in them. I store these magazines in a private office. I am aware of the punishment picture-makers will receive and I am also aware that angels don’t enter any home in which a dog or a picture is present – these facts I am made aware of by sayings of the Prophet Salallaahu alayhi wasallam. Please clarify this issue for me, in such a way that no doubt is left in my mind. |
Answer: There is nothing wrong with keeping books, newspapers, and magazines – those that are beneficial – even if there are pictures in them. You should, however, wipe out any pictures of women and the faces of men, applying the authentic Hadith in this regard. |

Question: Is taking photographs with a camera haraam or not?
Response:Yes. Taking photographs of (all) that which has a soul (from amongst the humans and animals) with a camera and other than it is haraam. And it is upon the one who takes the photograph to repent to Allaah and seek His forgiveness and feel sad at that which has come to pass from his actions and not to return to it.
And with Allaah lies all success and May Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.
